EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Dr. Stephanie Pincus has had a multifaceted career spanning academic medicine, government service, and physician workforce issues. Most recently, she has focused on the emerging crisis in the physician workforce, and on the current and changing roles of professional women. Dr. Pincus initiated The RAISE Project (Recognizing the Achievements of Women In Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine), a national awards website and clearing house funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. In addition, she is writing a book on career guidance, while maintaining clinical and administrative positions at the VA Western NY Healthcare System.
From 2000 to 2004, Dr. Pincus served as the Chief Academic Affiliations Officer in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Department of Veterans Affairs, in Washington, DC, heading the Office of Academic Affiliations and leading the teaching mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs. As one of its four statutory missions, “To educate for VA and for the Nation," the VA conducts education and training programs for health professions students and residents. Over 70,000 students annually from all health professions, including 28,000 medical residents and 16,000 medical students, receive clinical training in VHA facilities through affiliations with over 1,200 educational institutions. Dr. Pincus set policies for the VA's educational programs and managed an over $450 million annual budget. Initiatives under her leadership included the Interprofessional Palliative Care Program, the National Quality Scholars Fellowship, and a groundbreaking Learners' Perceptions Survey.
Prior to her VA service, Dr. Pincus served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology and Program Director of the Residency Training Program in Dermatology at the State University of New York at Buffalo's School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, as well as Chief of Dermatology at Buffalo General Hospital and the Buffalo VA Medical Center. She received an M.D. degree cum laude from Harvard Medical School and an M.B.A. from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University; her residencies were completed at the University of Washington in Seattle. She is board-certified in internal medicine and dermatology. Dr. Pincus was a Principal Investigator for 11 grant awards, conducted 20 clinical research studies, and authored 57 journal publications, 16 book chapters, and 45 presentation abstracts. Honors include Phi Beta Kappa (Reed College), Alpha Omega Alpha (Harvard Medical School), two Dermatology Foundation Fellowships, an NIH Clinical Investigator Award, and inclusion among the “Best Doctors in America” (since 1993) and “The World Who's Who of Women” (since 1996). She has served on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology and as President of the Harvard Medical Alumni Association.
